REFEREES chief Hugh Dallas was last night sacked by the SFA over the Popegate email scandal.

Five other staff members were also booted out over the email, which contained a crude paedophile slur.

Dallas is understood to have offered to quit over the storm, which saw the Catholic Church make a public demand for his dismissal. But he was forced to stay in his post as head of referee development - so he could be fired by under-pres sure chief executive Stewart Regan.

A source said last night: "Hugh was embarrassed and dismayed by the scandal.

"He was being vilified as some kind of bigot for forwarding an email which he believed satirical NOT sectarian, although it was undoubtedly in bad taste.

"But his primary concern was for his family. That is why he offered his resignation.

"Perhaps the SFA felt there was a need for them to be seen to take action.

"I would imagine he feels relieved now to be out of it."

Dallas was the only one of the staff under investigation over the email - sent on the day the Pope visited Scotland in September - to take a lawyer into his hearing.

The others were targeted because their "electronic fingerprints" were found on the email, sent from Dallas's account at the SFA.

Last night, sources claimed one was dismissed simply for receiving the email.

One SFA insider said: "The other guys are members of the inner circle, very close to the coaching and support staff of the national team.

"They are all in a panic and are joining the union and looking for legal help."

Last night , there was nobody available for comment at the SFA, who are preparing to deal with a referees' strike this weekend.
