For victims, disclosing abuse and seeking redress can be traumatic – often as distressing as the initial abuse. Research shows that responses to disclosures of abuse can be particularly traumatising, leaving victims and their families feeling a sense of re-abuse. While some aspects of this retraumatisation are probably inevitable, all can be minimised. The difficulties of the disclosure process, and ways of ameliorating them, are the focus of the Sexual Assault Summit 2010. No matter how successful current prevention strategies may be, a population of victims will exist for some time to come, so disclosures will continue, and in turn we have a responsibility to ensure that re-abuse is minimised as much as is humanly possible. The Sexual Assault Summit is for government officials, advocates, medical professionals, academics, researchers, police & emergency services, counsellers, and anyone involved in working with survivors of sexual assault.
