A Miami lawyer who specializes in lawsuits against pedophile priests filed a new case Friday against the Archdiocese of Miami, claiming former priest Neil Doherty of Broward County molested a teenage runaway in the 1980s.

It was the 22nd such case lawyer Jeffrey Herman has filed involving Doherty, of Lake Worth, who retired in 2002 after serving the parishes of St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Margate and St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Fort Lauderdale.

Doherty, 67, is in Broward County Jail awaiting trial on criminal charges he repeatedly drugged and raped a young boy during the 1990s. Doherty has been under house arrest, tethered to a monitoring device, since 2006. Earlier this week, Circuit Judge Ilona Holmes sent Doherty back to jail pending trial, ruling he had disconnected his monitoring device eight times since 2009. The trial has yet to the scheduled. He faces a sentence of 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

In the suit filed Friday, Herman said Doherty frequented a Miami trailer park where he befriended a 14-year-old runaway. The priest bought the boy, now 39, food, clothing and shoes to gain his trust, the suit said. Doherty later plied the youth with alcohol, cocaine and marijuana, the suit continued, and sexually abused him on multiple occasions.
