Reforms Coming, Radical Change Unlikely for Legionaries? Catholic Culture November 10, 2010 http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=8234 John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter reports on the reform of the Legion of Christ, supervised by the papal delegate, Archbishop Velasio De Paolis. He finds a widespread belief that the reforms will entail "changes that go beyond mere tinkering, but fall short of the root-and-branch vision." One reason to doubt that a radical reform will take place, Allen writes, is that some of the Legionary priests who were most committed to dramatic changes have already chosen to leave the troubled order. Allen suggests that two key measures of the reform will be the handling of internal references to the disgraced founder of the Legion, the late Father Marcial Maciel; and the extent to which members are given greater personal freedoms. |
