SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A former Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy is teaming up with Oprah Winfrey in an effort to stop sexual predators.

Kim Allyn will make an appearance on Friday's "Oprah Winfrey Show" with 200 other men who will collectively say that they are survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Allyn said he was molested by a priest between the ages of 10 and 12 and that the after-effects of those encounters have haunted him throughout his life.

The show part one of a two-part series dedicated to raising awareness about male sexual abuse.

"I've got 8 years of counseling and I've learned about myself and a lot about other people, too," Allyn said. Allyn was contacted by producers of the "Oprah Winfrey Show" on the show after they saw him in the movie "Boyhood Shadow: I Swore I'd Never Tell." The movie was about the effects of childhood sexual abuse on boys.

Allyn said he hopes the Oprah shows will bring a taboo topic out into the open.

"The sole purpose is in fact to let them know that it's OK, that they can get help, that they're not alone and it's not shameful," Allyn said.

Allyn's son, Easton, and wife, Lisa, joined Allyn on the show in Chicago. Lisa Allyn said she watched as some of the men in another studio shared their personal stories.

"People just started crying. I mean, it was just the emotion, and we weren't even in the room," she said.

A second segment of the show is scheduled to air Nov. 19.

The priest accused of molesting Allyn died a number of years ago, but the church entered into a $3.5 million settlement 4 years ago with Allyn and five other alter boys.
