He had helped me with so many evils in my life." These were the words of Velaphi Malgas, the man who allegedly killed Randfontein Catholic priest Father Lionel Sham because he had failed to pay him for sex. Malgas was testifying in a trial-within-a-trial where he wants a statement made to the police, in which he claimed he had a sexual relationship with the priest, dismissed as evidence. He told Johannesburg high court the statement was all lies and that he was instructed by the police to tell them. "I never had a sexual relationship with him," he said. State prosecutor Advocate Zaais van Zyl asked if it was a lie that he killed Sham because he had paid him R40 instead of the usual R200 for sexual services. "I heard there was pornographic material found in the priest's house. I never said those things about being in a sexual relationship with him," he said. The state alleges Malgas and his brother-in-law Daniel Mpevu, who has died, went to the priest's house and robbed him of R15,000 before tying him up and forcing him into his car. They allegedly dumped him at an open veld in De Deur.
