A church group says it's making arrangements so the pope can possibly meet victims of clerical sex abuse during his four-day trip to Britain.

Bill Kilgallon, chair of the National Catholic Safeguarding Commission, said he didn't know for sure whether the pontiff would see abuse victims but said Thursday "we're making preparations in the eventuality" because such a meeting couldn't be arranged overnight.

Pope Benedict XVI has met with victims on previous visits abroad. The Vatican has only confirmed such meetings after they occur.

Kilgallon said any such meeting would involve fewer than 10 victims and would happen in private. Victims would be free to speak afterward.

The group ensures that churches safeguard children and vulnerable adults.
