Almost 3,000 People Leave Iceland's State Church Iceland Review September 8, 2010 http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_news/?cat_id=16539&ew_0_a_id=367233 From December 1, 2009 to August 31, 2010, 2,900 people deregistered from the State Church of Iceland. The decrease was the most significant last month when approximately 2,000 deregistered from the church, according to the National Registry of Iceland. In the past few weeks, the State Church has been in the spotlight due to alleged sexual violations by former Bishop of Iceland Ólafur Skúlason, Morgunbladid reports. More men than women have deregistered from the church and more residents of the capital region than people who live in other parts of the country but the distribution is rather even throughout the age groups. Currently, 79.18 percent of the Icelandic nation are registered members of the State Church. The country's second largest religious association is Fríkirkjan, the Independent Church in Reykjavík, of which 2.6 percent of the nation are members. The three independent churches in Iceland have seen an increase of approximately 550 members in the aforementioned period and other religious associations have increased by 170 members. Around 6.2 percent of the nation are not members of any religious association. |
