Camphausen Digital Journal August 30 2010 http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/296782 London - Timed to be active during Pope Benedict's four-day trip to England and Scotland, campaigners for the Catholic Women's Ordination campaign (CWO) will use London buses for ads that read 'Pope Benedict - Ordain Women Now!' Having learned a lesson from the earlier atheist campaign to use posters on buses to disseminate their views, a religious lobbying group known as Catholic Women's Ordination (CWO) will have a multipronged campaign that includes posters on London's public bus lines. While the 2008 campaign by the British Humanist Association included slogans like "There's probably no god, stop worrying and enjoy your life," the CWO ad will read "Pope Benedict - Ordain Women Now!" While it's highly unlikely that the Pope will take a bus, the 15,000-pound posters on 15 buses is merely a small part of the actions and protests that have been planned. The Pope may see the ads, however, when buses drive past Westminster Hall, at the Palace of Westminster, where the Pope is set to deliver a speech to Britain's civic society on Sept. 17, according to The Guardian. The same article also quotes CWO spokeswoman Pat Brown as saying: "We do not want to be disruptive, but I think the church has got to change or it will not survive. I am quite hopeful at the moment because I think the church is in disarray." The CWO, operating since 1993, regards itself as loyal, in general, to the Roman Catholic Church (RCC), yet its members, including male priests, campaign for gender equality and the ordination of women. Elsewhere,Pat Brown has explained that the RCC forbids them to speak about this topic inside churches, which is why they feel forced to use publicity stunts such as the ad-campaign or the planned protest outside Lambeth Palace, where the pope will meet Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury. She also said the male priests who are members of the group have to keep their membership a secret for fear of disciplinary action.
