Churchman Charged over Abuse Gulf Times August 22 2010 http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=381328&version=1&template_id=38&parent_id=20 A Baptist Church minister from Surrey who is also the husband of a Boys’ Brigade vice-president has been charged with sexually abusing boys as young as seven. The Rev Robert Dando, a senior minister from Worcester Park Baptist Church, is accused of abusing the sons of two family friends in America. Dando, 46, is being held in jail in Fairfax, Virginia, following his arrest on July 23 while visiting a friend. Amanda Allchorn, spokeswoman for the Baptist Union of Great Britain, said he had tendered his resignation from the church with immediate effect. “The church and the family would welcome some space at this difficult time,” she added. Dando is accused of sexually abusing two boys when they were aged between seven and 13. Now aged 21 and 17, his alleged victims spoke to police in December last year. An investigation was launched and Mr Dando was arrested and charged with four counts of aggravated sexual battery, police in Fairfax said. A police spokeswoman said the 21-year-old came forward to allege he had been abused between the ages of eight and 13. “Police discovered a second victim, now 17, who also alleges he was abused under similar circumstances when aged about seven or eight.” In 2005, Dando was appointed executive assistant to Dr David Coffey, the then president of the Baptist World Alliance, a support organisation for Baptists worldwide. |
