A one-time Columbus priest with a history of wrongful activity with an underage male is jailed in Canada and charged with sex crimes involving children.

Father Phillip Jacobs, 60, is in custody in British Columbia where he was arrested earlier this week while disembarking from a flight from California.

Father Jacobs served in Columbus and Westerville churches and taught at the Pontifical College Josephinum from 1975 through 1993.

According to Canadian Television, CTV, he was removed from priestly duties in Columbus in 1993 after a complaint and investigation but no criminal charges were ever filed.

The investigating authority in Canada is the Saanich Police Department. The department cited complaints filed by people who were minors during a time in the late 90s through 2002 in the parish where the suspect served.

He is a Columbus native.

The bishop of the Canadian diocese where the suspect served apologized.

"I am truly sorry for any harm caused by this situation and the impact on those affected said Bishop Riochard Gagnon.

SNAP, an organization of adults who were abused by clergy when they were children issued a statement urging anyone in Central Ohio who had been affected by Father Jacobs to report what happened.
