The Catholic Church has shown it is "out of touch with reality" by labeling sex abuse and women's ordination as "delicta graviola" or grave delicts, a Sudbury critic of the church says.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith recently published its new "Norms concerning the most serious crimes," which includes, among others, pedophiles and the ordination of women.

According to the document, pedophilia is a sin, but so is any attempt to ordain female priests.

"Lumping us with the men who are the perpetrators of these crimes is absolutely mean-spirited and out of touch with reality," said Marie Bouclin.

Bouclin was ordained a priest by a group the church does not recognize. She was ordained in 2007. The Vatican, however, considers that a crime against the church.

Bouclin is not deterred, however. "Disobeying an unjust, man-made rule about who can be ordained to ensure Catholics have access to the Sacraments is hardly a serious crime."

She said the Vatican has put church law above civil law by not requiring bishops to report sex crimes by priests to the police.

"The document also puts church law above the Gospel by not providing people with priests, so protecting the institution is more important to the hierarchy then ensuring people receive the sacraments," Bouclin said.

She said this latest condemnation reinforces the impression that the church hierarchy is operating out of fear of losing control over people's lives.

"People do not want a church where there is no justice and compassion."

Bouclin said she does not think the Roman Catholic Church will ever accept female priests. However, "I do believe the Holy Spirit works miracles."
