Archdiocese, St. Stan May Be near Agreement By Tim Townsend St. Louis Post-Dispatch July 10, 2010 http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/metro/article_2f20e4cc-8c55-11df-ad15-00127992bc8b.html ST. LOUIS More evidence that a final act to the St. Stanislaus drama may come soon arrived in the mail last week. A postcard from St. Stanislaus Kostka Church board of directors chair Richard Lapinski told parishioners they should be prepared to vote on a "reconciliation offer" from St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson at an "informal meeting" at the church on July 25 or Aug. 1. The postcard said than in a "historic vote" parishioners will be choosing between two board of directors slates "and also on the reconciliation offer on the table." But the church's pastor, the Rev. Marek Bozek, backed away from Lapinski's language in the postcard, saying it contained "a mistake in wording." He said that while discussions between the church and the archdiocese were indeed continuing, St. Stanislaus attorneys were working to "correct Mr. Lapinski's error." He said the meeting was simply for the congregation to be updated on the status of the church's legal battle with the archdiocese, and discuss how to proceed. Bozek, is no longer a Roman Catholic priest, and, technically, St. Stanislaus has not been a Roman Catholic church, or part of the archdiocese, for years. St. Stanislaus board member John Baras, whose contact information was included on the postcard for parishioners to forward absentee ballots to, said the wording was intentional and anticipatory. "We wrote it that way thinking we'll be voting on a reconciliation by the time of the meeting," he said. As recently as last month, Carlson said that while "some progress" had been made, "it's not near being resolved yet." But in a statement given to the Post-Dispatch Saturday, Carlson said "after a number of meetings with those involved, I have made an offer to the Board of Directors for the reconciliation of St. Stanislaus with the Catholic Church, which is currently under discussion." ttownsend@post-dispatch.com or 314-340-8221 |
