Rome - The archbishop of Naples, Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, is being investigated for corruption, Italian media reported Sunday.

The 67-year-old is the subject of a probe into murky property transactions, in which the cardinal is said to have gained 2.5 million euros (3.09 million dollars) between 2001 and 2006, when he was Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

Vatican spokesman Padre Federico Lombardi on Sunday said that he had "complete trust" that the situation would be cleared up soon and said Sepe would give his full cooperation within "the framework of regulations between the Holy See and the Italian state."

The investigation also involves Diego Anemone, a Rome real estate developer, and the former transport and construction minister Pietro Lunardi.

Industry minister Claudio Scajola resigned at the beginning of May after being accused of buying a luxury apartment near Rome's Colosseum with bribe money from Anemone.
