CINCINNATI -- Pope Benedict XVI asked forgiveness Friday for the church's sex abuse scandal.

Some area Catholics said they supported the pope and would remain faithful to the church, and they said once there's been sufficient compensation given to the victims it would be time to move on.

"How many times does he have to apologize?" said Tony Gertz, of Reading. "I mean, we're sorry about it, sorry it happened. I was a server boy, I went through the 70s era and I think what happened is sometimes we opened the door to some people who shouldn't have been priests, and I think that's being cleansed and purified."

Critics say the Vatican continues to ignore the abuse crisis, and they've said new policies are needed because some bishops are still protecting predators.

"I feel that a lot of people have been hurt by this, tremendously hurt, and it's changed people in a lot of ways, just because they don't practice their faith because of it," said Joyce Farwich, of Colerain Township.

A spokeswoman for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests called the pope's apology inadequate, saying his words change no policies and do nothing to keep children safe.
