Meer dan 15.000 priesters uit de hele wereld waren in de Vaticaanstad aanwezig bij de eucharistie. De eucharistie is de tegenwoordigstelling van Christus' lijden en verrijzenis, teken van het Nieuwe Verbond, teken van eenheid in Christus en teken van eenheid met de kerkelijke hiërarchie (paus, bisschoppen, priesters en diakens). Bron: Wikipedia Tijdens deze eucharistie maakte Paus Benedictus XVI gebruik van het einde van het priesterjaar om het seksueel misbruik van kinderen door geestelijken te veroordelen. Hij vroeg ze om vergiffenis, en beloofde om al het mogelijke te doen om ze beter te beschermen.
