IRISH victims of child sexual abuse yesterday rejected a public apology from Pope Benedict, saying the words of remorse had not been matched with actions to rectify the sins of the past.

Marie Collins said while she accepted his words were sincere, Benedict had failed to accept the resignation of those exposed by the Murphy Report for six months.

"We have not seen some of the actions he needs to take . . . we have to complete the acknowledgement of the past so we can move forward," she said.

Executive Director of One in Four Maeve Lewis said: "We really will not believe children are any safer until there is a structured type of protection in place across the universal church."

She expressed particular concern about children in developing countries.

John Kelly of SOCA said Benedict could not expect forgiveness from God or victims of abuse until he did "the right thing".

Andrew Madden said the apology lacked substance and was "part of the pretence of being seen to do and say the right things".

He took issue in particular with Benedict's reference to the sins of priests coming to light this year. "He, for one, was aware of them for a very long time," Mr Madden said.
