Dominion man ID'd as motorcycle crash victim

SYDNEY — Police have identified a man who died after his motorcycle went off the road and crashed near Cape Breton's Ingonish Beach.

RCMP say Morris Musial, 59, of Dominion died in hospital after the mishap on Saturday afternoon.

Police say the cause of the crash is not known and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

Church property sale raises beach concerns

SYDNEY (CP) — The sale of Roman Catholic Church property to pay for a sexual abuse lawsuit has raised concerns that vehicle access to a Cape Breton beach may be lost if church-owned water frontage is sold.

The diocese of Antigonish has given instructions to its parishes to prepare all property for sale that isn't considered a core asset.

Coun. Mae Rowe of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality said beach-goers are worried the 1.8-hectare parcel of land at Big Pond Beach will be sold to private interests.

The church-owned land is the only place cars can be parked by people accessing the beach.

The provincial Beaches Act gives the government the authority to designate lands above the high-water mark as a beach.

The diocese hasn't released a detailed list of properties it intends to sell in order to pay the $18.5-million abuse settlement.

Man charged with arson after fire at house's side

Halifax RCMP charged a man with arson after a house fire near Musquodoboit Harbour Saturday night.

Halifax regional fire services and the RCMP went to Ostrea Lake Road at 9:50 p.m. Saturday. A fire at the side of the home was put out and the two occupants weren't hurt.

Officers were told that a man with a jerry can was seen running away from the area. Police later arrested a 34-year-old man at a nearby home.

He was due in Dartmouth provincial court Monday on charges of arson and arson with disregard for human life.

RCMP seize pot plants, 24 guns from house

Halifax RCMP seized two dozen firearms and 246 marijuana plants after answering a call about an impaired driver in East Chezzetcook on Friday.

"We're still looking for a potential suspect," RCMP Cpl. Joe Taplin said Monday morning.

Officers were called to an East Chezzetcook Road residence about a possible impaired driver who was uttering threats. They went to the house, which belongs to the suspect, but he'd left the area. However, police were told the man had some unregistered weapons.

"We secured the residence, then came back with the search warrant and seized the firearms," Taplin said.

In all, the officers found nine rifles, 14 shotguns and one sawed-off shotgun.

During that search, they found enough evidence to get a second warrant to search for drugs and ended up seizing 246 marijuana plants.
