BOSTON — Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley says as he watched the clergy abuse crisis unfold in Europe this spring, he put his thoughts down on paper in a letter to Pope Benedict XVI.

O'Malley, while not disclosing the exact content of the letter, tells The Boston Globe that he wrote it because of his concern about the way things were "unraveling" in Europe and the church's response.

Now, O'Malley is part of the pope's response to the latest revelations.

Earlier his month, after leading three U.S. dioceses roiled by priest abuse scandals, O'Malley was one of several prelates tapped to help investigate Ireland's crisis.

He says he has learned that dealing with abuse allegations takes transparency, listening to victims, and adopting effective policies to deal with it.
