Paedophile Priest to Get $800 Per Month in Diocese By Stephen Rogers Irish Examiner June 5, 2010 http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/kfcwkfojsnmh/rss2/ PAEDOPHILE former Irish priest Oliver O’Grady is to receive almost $800 (ˆ660) a month for the next 10 years from the very US diocese where he molested a number of children. O’Grady, who served seven years of a 14-year sentence, has confessed to molesting up to 25 children in the US. Those confessions form the basis of the Oscar-nominated documentary, Deliver Us From Evil. The paedophile was sent to prison in 1993 after pleading guilty to four counts of lewd acts with minors. In 1999, it became clear that O’Grady would be out of prison within a year. The new Stockton Diocese bishop Stephen Blaire asked O’Grady to request to be removed from priesthood. The imprisoned priest refused initially. However, he said he would change his mind if the diocese agreed to buy an annuity that would give him a monthly payment when he turned 65. The diocese agreed. Today, O’Grady celebrates his 65th birthday and can start to claim the payments of $788 (ˆ653) a month for 10 years. That is a total of $94,560 (ˆ78,500). According to the Kansas City Star, blogs and news reports in the US have called the payments "hush money," part of a deal to keep O’Grady from testifying against former Bishop Roger Mahony and other diocesan officials who allegedly knew about his abuse but kept moving him from parish to parish. Bishop Stephen Blaire, who arranged the annuity, told the newspaper that was not true. He said he fervently wanted O’Grady to be stripped of his priesthood and the only sure way to make that happen was for O’Grady to request a change in his status. |
