	Pope Urges Maltese Church to Co-Operate in Ensuring the Safety of Children Malta Independent May 18, 2010 http://www.independent.com.mt/news.asp?newsitemid=106264 In a letter sent to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Pope assured the government of Malta that he had urged the Church in Malta to co-operate so as to ensure the safety of children. In the letter, dated 29 April, the Pope thanked the Government and people of Malta for the efforts which went into making his visit here a success. In the letter, Cardinal Bertone said the Pope "is confident that your government will continue to be faithful to the great Christian heritage of your islands through the letter and spirit of your laws and customs." The Pope met victims of sexual abuse by priests while on his visit here last month.
