Vatican Plan to Dismiss Their Role in Sex Abuse, El Pasoans React By Martina Valverde KFOX May 17, 2010 http://www.kfoxtv.com/news/23575514/detail.html The Vatican is doing some last-minute preparations before defending themselves in a 2004 Kentucky case involving accusations of a priest molesting three young children, and the cover up operation of multiple sex abuse cases. At the center of the lawsuit is a 1962 document that allegedly stops bishops from reporting abuse to police. "It's definitely wrong, and these priests should be taken out of their practices," said Adrian Loera, of west El Paso. The Vatican's lawyer said the Louisville Archdiocese in question didn't even know about the document much less use it and it's just a procedural manual on how to handle sex abuse cases. The Vatican also said the priests aren't employees of the Vatican. The Vatican is expected to say the bishop was not an employee of the church. "They are the higher end of the chain of the priesthood, so that’s not the right way to go about it. They definitely need to take better action about what's been going on," said Loera. But Vatican officials are trying to dismiss the suit before the pope can be questioned. "He needs to be more outspoken, especially on things like this that taint the reputation of the Catholic community," said Loera. Tainted or not, Loera said he will never lose faith and neither should any other Catholic. "We will overcome this and hopefully the better will succeed," said Loera. The Holy See is also expected to have the case dismissed on the grounds that the court doesn't have jurisdiction under the foreign sovereign immunities act, which protects sovereign states from being sued in U.S. courts except under certain circumstances |
