  Three Chronicle Herald Journalists Honoured

Three journalists from The Chronicle Herald received top honours for page design, business reporting and commentary at the Atlantic Journalism Awards in Halifax on Saturday.

Editor Nadine Fownes received an award for best page presentation in the newspapers category. The editor received the top honour in the category for her Jan. 31, 2009 page entitled Justice for Karissa Boudreau.

The other nominees in the best page presentation category were Angie Kippers at the Telegraph-Journal, Saint John, N.B., and Brad Works at the Amherst Daily News.

Business reporter Judy Myrden received an award for her story Racing With the Tides, about tidal technology in the Bay of Fundy.

Nadine Fownes

The other nominees in the business reporting category, for any medium, included Alec Bruce, for his article Leaders of the Pack, in Atlantic Business Magazine; and Melanie Nagy and Keith Whelan, CBC Television, for their piece on the seal hunt in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Dan Leger, director of news content at The Chronicle Herald, took home the top award in the commentary category for his column about disgraced Roman Catholic bishop Raymond Lahey.

Nominees in this category included Eleanor Beaton, for an piece in Atlantic Business Magazine entitled The Case Against Protectionism, and Eric Marks for his piece in the Telegraph-Journal, Saint John, N.B., headlined Humble Spirit; Mighty Heart.

The 2009 Atlantic Journalism Awards were presented during a gala event at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel.

Judy Myrden

Stephen Maher, The Chronicle Herald's Ottawa bureau chief, is a contender for a National Newspaper Award. He is one of 66 finalists in 22 categories in the annual event set for May 14 in Toronto. Maher is nominated in the political reporting category for a series of stories about Lisa Raitt, the former natural resources minister.
