Kalonzo Is Trying out the Art of the Possible By Wambua Sammy The Daily Nation May 7, 2010 http://www.nation.co.ke/oped/Opinion/Kalonzo%20is%20trying%20out%20%20the%20art%20of%20%20the%20possible/-/440808/914116/-/5vguxa/-/ Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka’s words are normally carefully weighed and sanitised before they leave his mouth. The suave politician is, therefore, not your usual loose cannon. We could say his politics follows some sort of canonical law that would frown at stepping on sensitive toes. When you are such a politician, the politics of agitation becomes something of a nightmare to you. Having packaged yourself as the “voice of reason,” casting your stand on the burning issue of the day in stone doesn’t work. This is the unenviable position in which the Vice President finds himself on the ‘No’ and ‘Yes’ business. However, behind what could be construed as double-speak is probably a carefully calculated strategy. The VP wouldn’t want to besmirch the religious mien he has cultivated over the years. In the same vein, he wouldn’t like to be seen as opposing his boss, President Kibaki. But, and more importantly, he will need votes from both the ‘No’ and ‘Yes’ camps come 2012. Faced with such a dilemma, wouldn’t you try the art of the possible and, somehow, please both sides? ----------------- Catholic Priest Anastasio Kaburi is a brave soul. Bravery is not when you face a lion bare-handed but when you go against the grain, overcoming the grip of hypocrisy. Bravery is when you risk losing an exalted position in society, bosom friends and your ability to put food on the table. Father Kaburi has done that by waging a fight for the custody of his son at the Kirinyaga Central District children’s court. A son? Yes, but would you cast the first stone? This man is a beacon of honesty when the Vatican has been turned into a safe haven for child molesters. I have in mind Cardinal Bernard Law who resigned as the Archbishop of Boston on December 13, 2002 after Church documents were revealed which suggested he had covered up sexual abuse committed by priests in his archdiocese. Writing in the current issue of Newsweek, author Christopher Hitchens informs us the Cardinal Law left Boston hours before state troopers could issue him with summons seeking his grand jury testimony on the matter. Now, Hitchens tells us, Cardinal Law presides over a beautiful church and sits in various Vatican committees. This state of affairs is forcing men like Father Kaburi to drive a lance through the veneer of Vatican holiness. --------------- Dear Bwana Amos Kimunya, The matatu swooshed past my jalopy as I struggled to do 120kph and disappeared into the horizon where the Kapiti Plains and the sky are welded into one. Minutes later, I found its driver shaking hands with traffic policemen, after which it flew past me and engaged in a deadly race with an articulated lorry, behind whose wheel must have a mad man. Needless to add, after what looked a like a dog fight with itself, the lorry ended up on its roof. Is it not within your powers to put this madness to an end? Contact: swambua@nation.co.ke |
