Second Victim Comes Forward Alleging Abuse from Ex-loyola Chief WLS May 4, 2010 http://www.wlsam.com/Article.asp?id=1794498&spid= A second victim has come forward alleging he was abused by a former Loyola Academy president while he was head of the North Shore high school. The Rev. Larry Reuter admitted “he engaged in an inappropriate relationship” with an 18-year-old while he was president of Loyola between 1975 and 1990, according to a statement issued Monday from a local Jesuit leader. On Tuesday, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) issued a statement in response to a second victim coming forward, alleging the Jesuits hid Reuter's misconduct. "Our hearts ache for this latest victim, especially because he apparently suffered for years in silence and confusion, while Jesuits hid Reuter's sexual misdeeds," the statement said. "This young man would likely be much further down the long road to recovery if only Jesuits to urge victims to contract the very same callous, secretive and reckless institution which, for years, has protected predators instead of students." Jesuit officials learned information about the initial 18-year-old victim while reviewing personnel files as part of a routine process to “address any inappropriate or unethical conduct,” said the Rev. Timothy Kesicki, the head of the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus. Kesicki, who made the decision to remove Reuter from public ministry, said the province has “sought reconciliation” and has reached a settlement with the victim, according to the statement. The Chicago province on Monday said it has not received any other complaint of misconduct relating to Reuter, the statement said. No other details, including the gender of the victim, were released. The Wilmette-based Loyola was an all boys school until it became co-ed in 1994 “We are heartbroken by this violation of trust by a former member of our community,” current Loyola Academy President Rev. Patrick McGrath said in a statement. Reuter could not be reached for comment. |
