In Brief Indian Express May 2, 2010 http://www.indianexpress.com/news/in-brief/614092/ Granthi arrested for raping daughter Dalip Singh, a granthi (priest) in a local gurdwara and a resident of Alawalpur village in neighbouring Tarn Taran district, was arrested on Sunday for raping his minor daughter for over a year. The girl told a relative about the incident who took up the matter with her mother and they approached the police. Singh has been booked under Section 376 and 506 of the IPC. The girl said her father had threatened her with dire consequences if she told anybody. Bomb blast injures one in Amritsar market A crude bomb, planted on a cycle in the busy vegetable market on Tarn Taran road, exploded injuring one person. A mobile phone was used to trigger off the crude bomb, said the senior police officers. Police said the man, Onkar Singh, claimed to have seen a bag hanging from the cycle with a mobile set inside. It went off as he touched it. The police are suspecting local anti-social elements to be behind the blast. 20 labourers hurt as canter tyre bursts Around 20 labourers from Rajasthan, including women and children, were hurt after the tyre of the canter they were travelling in burst near Gehri Buttar village on Sunday. The labourers, the police said, were returning after harvesting wheat and were carrying bags full of wheat. They had taken a lift from the canter driver from Mehta village. FCI team raids godowns at Nihalsingh Wala A team from the Food Corporation of India (FCI), Chandigarh, raided godowns in Nihalsingh Wala where rice millers alleged poor quality rice was stored. The team has said to have taken eight samples of rice from three storehouses. Led by DGM (quality control), A S Arunachalam, the team took five samples from one storehouse and two from the other storehouse within the FCI premises and another from a rented storehouse. "We received complaint from a section of rice millers of the district. We have collected samples from some of the locations, which will be analysed in our laboratory at Chandigarh," Arunachalam said. Meanwhile, rice millers of Nihalsingh Wala continued their protest against the district manager FCI, Moga, D K Jain. The situation, however, went out of control when rice millers of the Moga sub-division reached the spot. The police had to be called in to diffuse the situation. Extortionists threatening Punjabi singer held Two extortionists — Bhupinder Singh, resident of Kandwala in Malout and Parminder Singh, resident of Muktsar— were arrested for demanding Rs 60 lakh from Punjabi singer Balkar Ankheela or face death. The police also recovered a .32 bore pistol from their possession. A statement issued by the office of Commissioner of Police Varinder Kumar stated that the folk singer had lodged a complaint alleging four person— Joginder Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Kabir and Jaspreet Singh — had called him claiming they had been hired to kill him for of Rs 30 lakh. He said the accused had demanded Rs 60 lakh to save his life. "Bhupinder Singh and Parminder, brother of Joginder, was arrested during a naka at Batala Road. Both are notorious criminals of Malout and have several criminal charges against them. Investigation revealed that Joginder had visited Balkar's house a few months ago and had hatched a plan to extort money from him. Two live cartridges, one magazine, a car has been recovered from them. The raids are being carried out to arrest the remaining accused," the police said. PTU exam held The Punjab Technical University (PTU) conducted the Combined Engineering Test (CET) for BTech and BPharma courses on Sunday. As many as 29,225 students had applied for the test held at a total 101 centres, said CET co-ordinator NP Singh. Saroj Khan opens dance school in Amritsar Bollywood Choreographer Saroj Khan launched the Saroj Khan Dance Academy in collaboration with Leo 1 Productions and Pankaj and Preeti Institute of Performing Arts in the city amidst much fanfare on Sunday. She appreciated the talent from Punjab and said the academy would give an opportunity to budding dancers. The courses would offer techniques and movements from Bhangra, Kathak, Bharatnatayam, Belly Dancing besides street and hip-hop fusion.
