India's Roman Catholic bishops are planning to report all abuse allegations against priests to the police, rather than handling cases internally.

The policy is a response to allegations worldwide that many priests who abused children were permitted to return to work, said Bishop Joseph Karakombil, spokesman for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India.

It also follows a case in which an Indian priest was accused of the sexual abuse of a girl when he worked in the United States. Joseph Palanivel Jeyapaul was charged in 2006 in absentia in Minnesota with forcing the 14-year-old to have oral sex.

Jeyapaul was given an administrative position on his return to India and not allowed to work with children.
