It was good to see some measure of humility from the Crookston Diocese on April 20, as I was eating dinner, scanning the Opinion section of The Forum. It came in the form of a column, which angrily spoke of anti-Catholicism and thinly veiled insinuations directed toward The Forum about coverage of the scandals involving sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic Church, written by Victor Balke, the bishop emeritus, of all people.

Now, as I was reading the letter, a few things caught my eye. The first was that Balke felt that the paper was reporting “disproportionately” on the entire issue of sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic Church, claiming that many other groups have problems with sexual abuse of minors that never get coverage like the Catholic Church does, saying that there is “precious little reporting about them.”

I’d argue that’s because other groups or individuals who have these problems are investigated quite thoroughly. Look at Michael Jackson’s case.

The second was the need to play the “anti-Catholicism” card, which was simply an underhanded gesture. First, while the church may have had a “no-tolerance” policy for the past decade, it came at least 50 years too late. Even the pope knew about it when he was still a bishop. Don’t use false prejudice to try to save face.

As for targeting The Forum, there is no need for Balke to direct all of his anger at all the world media on a single newspaper, insinuating it is prejudiced against the church. The sad fact of the matter is that, despite the effort the organization puts forth to make the world better, the organization hid the darkest aspects of it, and there is nothing holy or sacred about those actions, of those responsible or those responsible for covering it up.
