Catholic Clergymen Regret Sex Scandals By Mathias Mazinga New Vision April 28, 2010 http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/8/13/717762 THE Rector of Ggaba National Major seminary, the Rev. Fr. Paul Masolo, has apologised to Christians over the sex scandals reportedly committed by priests. Masolo asked Christians not to leave the Church, arguing that the highly publicised scandals were being committed by a few priests. "Forgive us for the mistakes that some of our priests make and do not abandon the Church. Continue praying for our priests," he said. Masolo was speaking to Christians during the launch of the seminarians' musical album at the seminary on Sunday. The Archbishop of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, also acknowledged the immense damage and shame that the scandals have inflicted upon the Church. The bishop, however, dismissed suggestions that letting Catholic priests marry would end sexual immorality and child abuse. "Celibacy is not the cause of sexual-abuse. Sexual crimes are not committed by celibate priests alone. Married clergy, pastors, teachers, politicians, employers, have also been reported to commit these crimes," Lwanga argued. He advised the errant priests to give up the priestly ministry if they feel they cannot lead a celibate life. Lwanga bought the seminarians' musical album at sh1m. About sh26m was raised from the sale of the albums. The money will go towards the the sh1b residential apartments project designed to generate income for the self-sustenance of the seminary. |
