Santiago - Gay activists in Chile protested against remarks by a top Vatican official who claimed that homosexuals were responsible for sexual abuse cases in the Catholic Church, not the ban on marriage.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's secretary of state, at a visit to Chile on Monday said: "Many psychologists and psychiatrists have shown that there is no link between celibacy and paedophilia," but have found a "relationship" between homosexuality and paedophilia.
His comments caused outrage among gay activists, lawmakers and medical specialists around the world.
"We want to set a sign of resistance against this disgusting attempt by Bertone and the Vatican, to pass off its responsibility for the crimes of paedophile priests to gays," said Rolando Jimenez, head of Chile's national gay movement.
No reputable study exists to support Bertone's claims, Jimenez said.
The Vatican had to "finally take the political, legal and ethical responsibility" for the crimes that priests have committed around the world, he added.
