Calls for Pope's Arrest Evoke Reader Reactions Deutsche Welle April 14, 2010 http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,5466034,00.html Prominent British atheists have begun looking into the possibility of having the pope arrested when he visits the UK in September. Readers sent in their thoughts on the matter. The following comments reflect the views of DW-WORLD.DE readers. Not all reader comments have been published. Prominent British atheists endorse efforts to seek pope's arrest It is ludicrous to suggest the pope should be arrested and tried. That is absolute nonsense!! Any reasonable person would agree. -- Rebecca Feist, US
Yes, the pope should be put on trial and also banned from entering the UK. He is not welcome here. The pope is not only responsible for covering up abuse of children the world over but is also responsible for generating tension between Protestants and Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland by failing to recognize the Protestant churches. -- Andrew, Great Britain Now I am convinced that this has really gone too far: Suggesting that the pope be brought before a court! I don't think so! If the Catholic Church closed their doors tomorrow what would happen to the poor, who they continue to care for around the world? The universities around the world where they educate? The hospitals where they care for the sick? The social services where they care for those with no money, and give them a place to eat and live when they are homeless? The Catholic Church has done more for people than any other faith. This pope has said he wants to rid the Church of the filth. This he is doing! This is an agenda from known atheists who have quite a few skeletons in their own closets. The Catholic Church is cleaning house and other institutions had better follow suit. -- Maria, US Putting him to trial might be a bit harsh but I still think that allowing bishops, priests and deacons to marry and have children like the Anglican Church is a positive step he could take and if he has dialog with the Archbishop of Canterbury (The head of the Anglican Church) then maybe some progress might be made on this issue. -- Stuart John Pearson, Australia The pope's role in this sinister business seems very clear to me, but he deserves a fair trial just to make absolutely sure that he's committed, at the very least, a crime of omission. -- Meg, US |
