A former priest with ties to Welland has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting teenage boys in Welland and Cayuga in a case that dates back 30 years.

Donald Grecco appeared in a Hamilton courtroom and admitted guilt in sexually abusing three boys between 1978 and 1986.

The 70-year-old former Catholic priest at St. Kevin's in Welland and St. Stephen's in Cayuga appeared in court Thursday, March 25, where he pleaded guilty to charges of gross indecency.

He is scheduled to return to court in Hamilton on June 3 for sentencing.

Crown attorney Gregory Smith outlined Grecco's wrongdoings in front of Judge Kathryn Hawke as supporters and family members of the three victims listened inside the John Sopinka Courthouse in downtown Hamilton.

Grecco was sitting next to defence lawyer Brian Donnelly, and showed no emotion during the nearly hour-and-a-half proceeding.

The information presented in the courtroom revealed multiple sexually-related incidents took place between Grecco and the victims.

A publication ban on the case prohibits release of any information that could lead to identification of the victims.

The Ontario Provincial Police had charged Grecco, a St. Catharines native, in the fall of 2008.

The families of the victims didn't wish to discuss the incidents with the media.

Grecco also served as a priest at St. Alexander Church in Fonthill.
