A Chelmsford priest was placed on leave after he was arrested Friday night in Nashua, N.H., as part of a prostitution sting, church officials and police said.

The Rev. William Ventura, the parochial vicar at St. John the Evangelist Parish, was charged with a misdemeanor count of attempting to a solicit an adult, said Nashua police Capt. Scott R. Howe.

Howe said Ventura was one of eight people nabbed in sting operation. He said Ventura was released on bond pending his arraignment on April 21.

The Boston Archdiocese said in a statement that Ventura accepted a voluntary leave of absence and is restricted from participating in public ministry.

“This leave of absence will remain in effect while the case is investigated and adjudicated,” the statement said. “The Archdiocese is cooperating fully with law enforcement’s investigation. We pray for all who are impacted by this matter.”
