Father James Scahill of St. Michael's parish in East Longmeadow gave a sermon yesterday that basically called for Pope Benedict to step aside for the sake of healing in the Catholic Church.

Later, he summed it up for a reporter from WGGB.

The idea that one priest could bring down the Pope might seem outrageous. But nothing is as outrageous as the veil of denial that the Pope and many bishops have wrapped around the issue of pedophiles in the priesthood.

And if it should turn out that there's not room for father Scahill and the Pope in the same hierarchy, I wouldn't count out father Scahill.

Here's why. I know what happened back in 2002 when Father Robert Bullock became the first priest to call for Cardinal Bernard Law to resign.

Father Bullock took his stand in a live television interview... With me.

I remember there was break and father bullock looked across the table and said "I'm toast."

But it didn't turn out that way. First one priest and then another and another joined him.

Eventually, 57 priests signed a letter, which pressured the Cardinal to step aside.

Years later, when Father Bullock --still wearing his priestly collar -- died of cancer, he was hailed as a man of courage.

In the words of a colleague, he died a, "good and faithful priest". The man who spoke those words was Sean O'Malley, who replaced Bernard Law as Cardinal.

One voice speaking truth to power can change the world. But I suspect Father Scahill already knows that.
