When the lawsuit against the Catholic Diocese of Memphis and Father Juan Carlos Duran's Dominican order settled out of court for $2million in February of last year, The Commercial Appeal and the Memphis Daily News argued in Circuit Court that sealed records in the case should be made public.

Retired special judge Charles O. McPherson agreed, but ordered attorneys to black out the names of alleged victims and of priests with unsubstantiated charges, a task that has taken a full year.

"These court documents represent an important aspect of justice and closure for those involved in these tragic incidents," said Chris Peck, editor of The Commercial Appeal.

"The newspaper has posted these documents online for one reason: to give the public access to the unvarnished, on-the-record, taken-under-oath facts about events that for too long were hidden," Peck said.
