IOWA -- The sex abuse scandal in the Catholic church was on the minds of many central Iowa Catholics as they celebrated Easter on Sunday.

In the wake of recent allegations of more clergy sex abuse and cover ups, Pope Benedict XVI did not speak of the scandal at the Vatican's Easter Mass.

At Iowa churches, some Catholics said the pope needs to clear the air.

"He's supposed to be a scholar, and I think it would have shown compassion," said David Dahlquist. "Even if it's something to offer the people that he knows about it and that they have some kind of plan to deal with it, but they haven't done that yet."

Other Catholics said the church should be focusing on the importance of Easter.

"I think today would actually be an inappropriate day to raise the issue," said Sue Oldenberg of Wilmington, Del., "I think he should have done it in a less formal setting or under different circumstances. I don't think he should have raised it on Easter Sunday or Palm Sunday."

A recent CBS News poll shows that American opinions of the pope have significantly changed in the last four years. The poll found 24 percent of those surveyed have an unfavorable view of Pope Benedict. In 2006, only 4 percent said they felt that way.
