One response to the Pope's assessment today that sexual abuse charges against hundreds of priests in scores of countries adds up to "petty gossip" is that he consider adding an Eleventh Commandment: "Thou shalt not commit sexual abuse against kids." Hundreds of millions have already been paid in lawsuits against the church. Victims are now testifying on television; one priest, it is reported, ran amok in a school for deaf boys! Who could imagine anything worse than an adult to whom youngsters turn for spiritual salvation blight their lives forever with such hellish behavior? Another realistic suggestion for the Pope: how about getting busy totally revamping the training of priests? It couldn't hurt!
