Public Backs Call for an Inquiry By Gemma Kavanagh Kerryman March 17, 2010 http://www.kerryman.ie/news/public-backs-call-for-an-inquiry-2101490.html IRELAND -- AMID the growing disquiet surrounding Cardinal Sean Brady's handling of allegations relating to clerical sex abuse we asked people on the streets of Tralee this week if the cardinal should resign and if an independent inquiry into clerical sex abuse should be carried in Kerry to clear the air. Grace Clifford, The Spa, Tralee: "Yes, Cardinal Brady should resign out of respect. An independent inquiry would be nice for victims for closure." Katelyn Nolan, Fenit: "He is not fit for the job. An independent inquiry should be carried out." John Golden, Ardfert: "He let people down. He was put in position where he was looked up to and he abused his power. It's a downright scandal. But it wasn't the first and it won't be the last. We should run the lot of them out of it" Paul McElligott, St. Brendan's Park, Tralee: "If it was one of ourselves we would report it. Because of his position, he should resign. There should definitely be an inquiry." Christopher McCarthy, Strand Road, Tralee: "He should go. The Pope should resign too - look at the coverups in Germany. Whether a priest, a cardinal or a pope, there should not have been covers-ups. The pope should meet with the abused." A man who would only identify himself as Tom said: "The whole thing has gone to wreck and has gone on too long. An inquiry should definitely be carried out to get to the bottom of things." These sentiments were echoed by many others on the streets of Tralee, although several people wished to remain anonymous. Only two people had different views: "No. He worked within the rules at that time. He was a man of his time," said one. Another stated: "It is his own decision" and added: "What is it going to do now?" |
