BISHOP Gerard Clifford backed Cardinal Sean Brady yesterday ( Tuesday) and admitted the Catholic Primate is 'under pressure'.

Bishop Clifford was at Holy Family Church yesterday for the Scoil Mhuire na nGael confirmation that was supposed to be celebrated by Cardinal Brady.

The Bellurgan-born cleric became the second bishop to publicly state that Cardinal Brady shouldn't resign.

Bishop Clifford said he had on Monday offered to perform the ceremony in Dundalk as his superior was 'under pressure'.

Speaking to the Argus after confirmation, Bishop Clifford said Cardinal Brady had 'given more time than most' to the issue of safeguarding children.

He said: 'Today is a day for families and when we are aware of young people. Over these crucial few days, it's people who were abused that are very much in our minds.

'Cardinal Brady, I know, has done more than most for survivors and was the one who brought survivors into the bishops' conference for the first time ever.

'I know Cardinal Brady extremely well, having worked with him for 16 or 17 years and his interest always has been and hopefully will continue to be the protection of children'.

When he was asked why Cardinal Brady hadn't come to Dundalk, Bishop Clifford said: 'There's no reason. There are many things happening and it would be a regular thing for us to swap confirmation dates.

'I suggested yesterday (Monday) that I would do it as he was under pressure. It was my suggestion.

'I don't think he should resign - what would it do for the safeguarding of children?'
