A Spanish monk arrested in Chile for possession of child pornography is also under investigation in Spain over the suspected abuse of children, his religious order said Tuesday.

The man was arrested in Chile last August, the Saint-Viateur order said in a statement.

He is also the subject of an investigation by Spanish authorities into suspected abuse of children while a teacher at Saint-Viateur schools in Spain, the statement said.

Saint-Viateur is "dismayed" by the news but said no case had yet been filed against the man.

Spanish newspaper El Pais said the 53-year-old, who taught physical education, religion and languages at three Saint-Viatur schools, is suspected of the sexual abuse of 15 children aged between 12 and 14.

The Roman Catholic Saint-Viateur order was founded in France in 1831 and now has schools in several countries.
