The Archdiocese of Munich has suspended a priest who had been convicted for sexual offences against children in the 1980s.

A statement by the archdiocese said the priest had failed to adhere to conditions governing his duties. The move by the German Roman Catholic Church comes in response to claims that Pope Benedict XVI turned a blind eye to sexual abuse of children when he was archbishop of Munich and Freising.

In 1980, Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger - the Pope's real name - agreed to transfer a paedophile priest from the northern German city of Essen to Munich in order to undergo therapy. Without his knowledge, the priest was assigned to work with youths in a parish in Oberbayern and later abused another child.

He was convicted of child sex abuse in 1986. The priest has not been accused of any other sex crimes since then.
