IRELAND -- A woman abused as a child by Fr Brendan Smyth says Ireland's Cardinal needs to step down.

It emerged at the weekend that in 1975, Cardinal Sean Brady, then a priest, interviewed two of Smyth's victims who were asked to take an oath of secrecy.

It was another 20 years before Brendan Smyth pleaded guilty to 74 charges of abusing children between 1958 and 1993.

Cardinal Brady is rejecting calls for his resignation, saying he didn't have any decision making power in the 1975 inquiry.

Helen McGonagle was abused by Brendan Smyth in Rhode Island in the US when she was a child - she says the Cardinal has to go, and hit out at the policy of secrecy in the church
