GERMANY -- A senior German cleric has publicly apologised for the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests. The country's clergy is the latest to be hit by scandal, after abuse was uncovered in America and Ireland, forcing Pope Benedict to hold crisis talks last week.

Archbishop Robert Zollitsch says he feels for the victims: "Sexual abuse against minors is always an awful crime. I support Pope Benedict's words out of deep conviction, and I apologise to the victims of all such crimes."

Over the past month, an increasing number of sexual abuse cases involving Jesuit high schools have come to light. More than 100 former students have made complaints against the priests who taught them.
