SOUTH AFRICA -- Reverend Paul Verryn has gone to ground after his suspension from the Methodist Church of Southern Africa.

The church announced his suspension on unspecified charges earlier this week.

Last year, Eyewitness News revealed that children, seeking refuge at the mission, were being forced to prostitute themselves in order to survive.

Verryn has been accused of doing little to protect them.

The former custodian of the Central Methodist Church has always been a controversial figure.

He has received international acclaim for taking in foreign nationals after a wave of xenophic attacks, at a time when others appeared reluctant to do so. But he has also had his fair share of criticism for the humanitarian crisis that has developed at the church, after thousands kept streaming in and the church being unable to cope.

Verryn who has always been media friendly is now reluctant to comment.

The former bishop will now have to answer to the leadership of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa.
