CORPUS CHRISTI (TX) -- Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that the Rev. Monsignor W. Michael Mulvey, currently Administrator of the Diocese of Austin, will be the next bishop for the Diocese of Corpus Christi, according to a news release from the local diocese.

He follows Bishop Edmond Carmody, 76, who has led the diocese since March 17, 2000. He submitted his resignation in January 2009 after celebrating his 75th birthday, as required for a Catholic bishop by canon law.

There are 68 parishes and 32 missions within the 12 counties that make up the diocese.

The Mass of Ordination and Installation will be March 25, according to the Austin diocese.

Bishop-designate Mulvey was born Aug. 23, 1949, the second of six children, to Daniel H. Mulvey Jr. and Marjorie Jane Patterson Mulvey, according to the Austin diocese. His siblings are Dan, Martha, John, Tim and Kim. He has 12 nieces and nephews.

All of his education was completed at Catholic schools including St. Edward's Catholic High School in Austin and St. Edward's University, where he graduated in 1971, according to the Austin diocese's Web site.

He attended seminary at the North American College in Rome from 1971-1976, the Web site reported. He got his bachelor's degree in sacred theology from St. Thomas University and his master's degree in sacred theology from Gregorian University.

He was one of 359 priests ordained by Pope Paul VI in 1975 in St. Peter's Square, the web site said. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Austin.

The Corpus Christi diocese will introduce Mulvey during a news conference at 10 a.m.
