The 57-year-old Giorgio Panini, parish priest of Brodano di Vignola, was placed under police guard in a Modena hospital, the ANSA news agency said. Panini, whose condition was described as serious, was allegedly injured during an early morning incident in which a 67-year-old-pensioner, Sergio Manfredini, was stabbed to death, and the man's wife and 42-year-old son were also injured. It was not immediately clear what caused the violence. Panini had been living as a lodger in Manfredini's home for several years, the news reports said.
