24-year Shame of Toxteth Church Warden Child Sex Abuser Liverpool Echo December 12, 2009 http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2009/12/12/24-year-shame-of-toxteth-church-warden-child-sex-abuser-100252-25375230/ A CHURCH warden who sexually abused three young girls over 24 years was put behind bars for eight years. Thomas Borrows, 65, systematically abused the youngsters after targeting them from a young age. Jailing Borrows, Judge Robert Warnock told the pensioner: “What you did was to rob those children of their innocence and deprive them of a happy childhood.” The judge added that he believed Borrows, who worked at St Margaret’s Church in Toxteth, posed a significant risk of committing further serious sexual offences and imposed a four -year extended licence. Liverpool crown court heard his crimes began nearly a quarter-of-a-century ago. But they only came to light in May this year when the aunt of his two younger victims spoke to their mum about their inappropriate behaviour. Robert Jones, prosecuting, told how it quickly became clear the eldest girl had been systematically sexually abused by Borrows and the “horrified” aunt rang the police. When the teenager was questioned by police she gave details of the abuse. Her younger sister was also interviewed and she too revealed how she had been abused by him. Further investigations revealed that many years before Borrows had also sexually molested another victim when she was aged between 13 to 15. The court heard that all Borrows' victims had been between 11 and 13 years old when he began molesting them and his behaviour had increased in seriousness with time and he had tried to have sexual intercourse with them. When interviewed Borrows initially denied the offences, but then made frank admissions. Borrows, of Princes Road, Toxteth, pleaded guilty to 15 offences involving indecent assault, assault by penetration and sexual activity with a child between 1985 and this year. He had signed an interim Sex Offenders Register order when he last appeared in court and was bailed with the condition not to work at his Toxteth church. But Mr Jones said Borrows had breached his bail conditions by moving to an address and not notifying the police. Judge Warnock ordered him to sign the Register for life and made a Sexual Offences Prevention Order. Michael Wolff, defending, said Borrows, who has no previous convictions, would find prison very difficult. He added that Borrows had admitted his guilt when interviewed and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity. Contact: news@liverpool.com |
