OTTAWA - Pope Benedict has appointed a new representative to serve in Canada.

The pontiff named Most Rev. Pedro Lopez Quintana to the position of Apostolic Nuncio on Thursday, said a statement from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Previously, Quintana was Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal. The archbishop succeeds Most Rev. Luigi Ventura, who recently became Apostolic Nuncio to France.

Quintana, 56, was born in Barbastro, Spain, and ordained a priest in 1980. He became a bishop in 2003, around the time he took up his post in India and Nepal.

He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1984 and has served in Madagascar, the Philippines and India, as well as in the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, as Assessor for General Affairs.

Quintana holds a doctorate in canon law and speaks five languages: Spanish, Italian, French, English and Portuguese.
