O'Connor was ordained as a priest by a breakaway church 10 years ago and says her strong faith is the reason she wants to defend the name of God. "I am Catholic by birth and culture and I'm very proud of that. I love the idea of God, which is why I feel so passionate about this. "These were men passing themselves off as representing God, and in their actions they have completely confused the idea of God. All I can say is if God were here on earth, he would be suing a lot of people for libel. "You hear about these stories without any emotional reaction, but if you actually sat down and thought about what has happened to these abuse survivors, you could cry a river." Blast O'Connor said that if Ireland was a "civilised" country, the Irish ambassador in the Vatican City would be sent home and the papal nuncio would be expelled from the Vatican. The chart-topping performer told the Herald she felt she had to come out and publicly blast the Church as the silence throughout the religious community became "deafening".
