Police arrested Rev. Robin Barrett, 52, of Conception Bay South on Tuesday following an investigation by the Toronto Police Service, which contacted the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in November. Bishop of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador, Cyrus Pitman, says Barrett has been removed from his duties to allow the investigation to proceed. Barrett was one of the first Anglican priests to come out in Newfoundland and Labrador, prompting debate within the church on issues surrounding homosexuality. Barrett also served on the Religious Social Action Coalition of Newfoundland and Labrador, fighting for issues of social justice. Bishop Pitman says the church is cooperating fully with authorities.
